Turkish Citizenship: 5-Year Residence Calculator

Find out how many days you spent abroad in the five years before applying and where you stand against the six-month limit.

Short answer

For Turkish citizenship by the general route you need five years of uninterrupted residence in Turkey, counted back from the date of application (Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901, Art. 11/1-b). Within those five years you may be abroad for six months in total at most; more than six months breaks the residence period and earlier periods are not counted (Regulation, Art. 71/1-b, c). As the number of days in a “month” is not defined, staying within 180 days is the safest course.

How does the calculator count?

  1. The period examined is the five years before the application date (Law No. 5901, Art. 11/1-b). Days outside the period are not counted.
  2. For each trip, the days abroad are added up including the exit and return days. As it is not written how the authorities count these two days, the total of full days only is shown as well.
  3. The total is compared with two readings of “six months”: 180 days with 30-day months, and 184 days, the longest six consecutive calendar months.
  4. If the cautious total does not exceed 180 days, the result is safe; if even the full-day total exceeds 184 days, the limit is exceeded; anything in between is borderline.

Three examples

In all three, the application date is 9 October 2026; the period examined is 9 October 2021 – 8 October 2026.

Situation Result
Three trips. 1–21 July 2023, 20 December 2024 – 10 January 2025 and 1 August – 15 September 2025. Valid residence started on 1 June 2021. 89 days (83 full days). Safe; 91 days remain to 180 days. The five years are complete.
Long summers. 1 January – 31 March 2022, 1 June – 29 August 2023 and 1–5 February 2024. 185 days, 179 counting full days only. Borderline: on the cautious count, 180 days were passed on 1 February 2024.
Early application. Valid residence started on 1 March 2022; one trip, 10 July – 20 August 2024. 42 days; time abroad is not a problem, but the five years are not complete. The earliest application date is 1 March 2027.

What the calculator does not cover

  • Type of permit. Time spent on a study, tourist, accompanying or medical treatment permit, as an asylum applicant or with a diplomatic identity card is not valid residence (Art. 71/1-ç). If you later move to a valid reason, earlier periods are counted too, except tourist residence (Art. 71/1-d).
  • Time without a permit. Staying in Turkey for more than six months without a valid residence permit also breaks the residence period (Art. 71/1-c). The calculator does not measure gaps between permits.
  • Other routes. The calculation is for citizenship by the general route (Art. 11). The five-year residence requirement does not apply to citizenship by marriage or by investment.

Frequently asked questions

How many days can I spend abroad for Turkish citizenship?

The Regulation says you may be outside Turkey for up to six months in total within the required residence period (Art. 71/1-b), but it does not define how many days a month has. With 30-day months, six months is 180 days; six consecutive calendar months come to at most 184 days. The calculator treats 180 days as the safe limit.

Some sources say 12 months or one year. Which is right?

The Regulation in force says (our translation) that a foreigner seeking Turkish citizenship “may be outside Turkey for a total of not more than six months within the required residence period” (Art. 71/1-b). Limits such as 12 months, one year or “180 days a year” do not appear in that text. Plan on six months in total over the five years.

Is the six months per trip or in total?

In total. All periods abroad within the five years are added up. More than six months breaks the residence period and earlier residence periods are not counted (Art. 71/1-c).

Which document is the count based on?

Under the Regulation, the length of residence in Turkey is determined from the residence document and the record showing your dates of entry to and exit from Turkey (Art. 71/1-a). Enter the dates from that record.

Do years on a student residence permit count?

Not on their own: time on a study, tourist, accompanying or medical treatment permit and as an asylum applicant is not valid residence (Art. 71/1-ç). If you later move to a valid reason, earlier periods are counted too; this rule does not apply to tourist residence (Art. 71/1-d).

Does time without a permit also break the residence?

Yes. Staying in Turkey for more than six months without a valid residence permit also breaks the residence period (Art. 71/1-c). The calculator does not count gaps between permits; check them separately.
